Karen - I thought it was because we had one of the shortest school years in the nation (we're dead last in per-pupil spending) but I did a little research and found out that we're right on the national average: 180 instructional days. My district usually starts on the last Monday of August and ends on the first Friday of June. I don't know if we just start earlier than your schools, or have fewer breaks during the year, but I know that even in our state some of the school districts are still in session for another week or so.

Johnina - thanks.

Max,
we have a much shorter spring break than most schools districts do. It could be that.

I'm jealous - we're not even halfway through our year!

Yeah, I've thought the same thing when you're writing about summer break and we're in the middle of our school year. The tables will be turned in a few months.
