Fall is in the air, duh, duh, da, da, da.

A cold front came through this weekend.  Dropped the afternoon highs down to the low 80’s and the overnight lows to the mid 50’s (That’s the high 20’s and the mid teens for you Celsius people).

I was sitting out on my front porch tonight and I swear I smelled autumn in the air.  You know, a cool breeze with a crispness to it?

Yup, summer’s over.  Not that we won’t see the 90’s again before it snows, but it’s still different.  I kind of like it.

Don’t get me wrong, I always dread autumn.  But for one reason only, it’s the harbinger of winter.  And other than the first couple snowfalls, winter sucks.  I’m not a big fan of cold, much prefer the heat.

On the other hand, I don’t think I would like living somewhere that didn’t see all four seasons.  Monotony drives me crazy, which is one of the reasons I didn’t become an accountant and make three times what I do as a teacher.  And why in the 19th year of my career I’ve been at 6 different schools, ranging from the highest income one in the district to the lowest one, and just about everything in between.

But I digress.  The weather.  I love summer.  I love spring.  I’d love autumn if it didn’t lead into winter and I’d love winter if I could stay home, wrapped up in a blanket in front of a fire watching the snow fall outside.

I was sitting on the porch swing, cool breeze rustling the leaves and it felt perfect.  One of those moments when the street was quite, the swing was swaying and all was right with the world.

So, winter is right around the corner.  Big deal, I’ll deal with that when it comes.  For now, though, I think I’ll head back out to the porch swing and enjoy the crispness. And I hope you all have a perfect moment like that sometime in the next 24 hours.

This resonates with me, as I had a similar thought earlier this evening as we played with the dog on the lawn and a sudden cool wind announcing the coming thunderstorm blew through our decidedly thin t-shirts.

I'm glad to see the heat and humidity give way to something a little less extreme. But, like you, I feel a little melancholy at what comes all too soon. I love all the seasons, too, but it's always a little tough to say goodbye to summer.

For now, though, I'll sit with my laptop at the table of my darkened kitchen - it's 2 a.m. here - and watch yet another thunderstorm roll past my window. Autumn can wait.

I agree with every thing you said, for a minute I thought I was talking! LOL...Spring is my most favorite because everything is fresh and new again (yeah and can be muddy) but it's lovely and you still have summer....I too am dreading winter, mostly because last year was so horrible!...no even if it hadn't I'd still be sad...I am just so in love with the outdoors without SNOW and COLD! The smell of fresh mowed grass!....open waters....!!!
What a charming soft lit porch....which later will be covered in that white stuff? Hope your long weekend is wonderful Max! Before it's back to school and work again!

I love the change of seasons also. Even here in Ga we are having a coolness in the morning that I so enjoy. My daughter who was born and raised here in the south got her first real taste of winter on Sept 15 her first year at BYU. It snowed and we only get snow here every couple of years so she had no winter clothes. You can't even buy winter clothes suitable for out there, here in the south. The bishops wife had to take her out shopping for a coat and the rest of her winter items had to come through catalogs and online. She is still out there now working on her Master's degree, but she like you dreads winter coming on.
Enjoy while you can
And thanks for stopping by my blog and your kind comments

Oh I love your evening pictures, with the soft light - can't say that it looks particularly cool, but....

I know we'll have plenty of cold temperatures before the real warmth, too. There's usually one baaad southerly storm which kills heaps of spring lambs :(

Enjoy your perfect moments!

I love the pics, especially the porch swing photo.

And I love autumn! I rejoice in the break in the miserable heat-- although I must say that (except for one day in July and the last horrid 10 days or so) we've had a very pleasantly warm-but-not-beastly summer. If all summers were like the last one, I'd enjoy them a LOT more.
But autumn is my favorite season. Not too hot, no threat of heat to come hanging over it, and we have Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas on the way. (I love holidays.)
And I'll take cold over heat any day. Heat gives me headaches and makes me lethargic. I can't sleep. I can't exercise. I can't think.
Cold, on the other hand, just means I put on another sweater and keep going. Cold does not make me physically miserable.
Hence, I love autumn and all that it means!

ET - I wish I could agree with you, but my body reacts just the opposite. I don't want to get out of bed when it's cold, and going outside into it is even worse. The air in the house is stagnant and dry. Heat, as long as it isn't humid, on the other hand makes me want to get up and do stuff. The house smells good because the swamp cooler is pumping fresh air through it.
.
Which brings me back to why having all four seasons is a good thing. At least that way we all get to have our favorite time of year, even if it is at different times.
