Weathered and Worn

That’s the theme for this week’s

The first thing I thought was that I was going to have a bunch of pictures of old trees for this theme.  My two brothers and I have a bunch of land up by Duchesne that is just littered with old dead trees, both fallen and still standing.  But instead, I found a slew of other worn and weathered things in the file holding my pictures of our land.

But, first the trees.  One fallen one.

One standing one.

And one that had been recently weathered by lightning.

Some of the other stuff I found was an old outhouse out in the middle of a field.

A good example of why you shouldn’t leave your plastic drop cloths out next to the cabin all winter.

My 1966 Jeep Wagoneer that became our “land vehicle” and then broke down fours years back.

And one of two old bridges along SR-40 on the way to our property.

The same one, from the side.

And the same bridge taken from an angle that makes the truck on the new SR-40 look like it’s crossing the closed bridge.

I like the random outhouse. Is it near an old cabin or something? Because otherwise, it's hilarious that someone made an outhouse in the middle of what's most likely been sheep country.....

If I remember correctly, I took the picture because it was standing all by itself.

I added a picture that shows it from further away. I think the buildings in the background were the closest to it.

Any outhouse in a storm, sez I.

Nice pics, Max.

There are plenty of downed trees around here (the EAB is much more than a mere nuisance), I might steal your idea for a 2nd go-around.

When one is that far away from civilization -- as must've truly been the case when that was built -- is there really a need for an outhouse? Sure, one has to be away from the water supply, but out on the range, won't a sizeable bush do?

I like the old outhouse too. And the trees. Nice selection!

Don't knock it anyone. An outhouse in the back of beyond comes in useful in an emergency. Good catch, Max.

I dig that everything here has a personal connection to it. Whenever I see your work, I don't just learn how to shoot. I also learn how to be in closer touch with the world around me.

hahahaaaa...an outhouse in the middle of nowhere?!! i guess there must've been a house near there...at some point...some where. or maybe they moved the house & left the john. or maybe the outhouse just outlived the house!!

one of my favorite things...are old trees...winter trees...like skeletons!

cool pictures of weathered and worn!

Max, you have some wonderful shots in this collection. I love the dead standing tree with those hills in the background. And the privy is such an unususal thing to find in what appears to be an isolated spot. Even that zebra stipe on the old jeep speaks to me.

You certainly did not have to look far to find some wonderful weathered and worn items.

Lisa - That's what I say. We don't have an outhouse or bathroom on the property, just a whole lot of bushes and trees.

Bob - Good catch, that's what we call our property - "Back of Beyond Ranch."

Rita - We had a lot of fun painting the zebra stripes on the Jeep. Unfortunately, there aren't many zebras running around Utah.

"weathered by lightning" I love your choice of words. Nature has a strange sense of humor at times, and it seems you get her just fine ;-)

Just love that old outhouse! Looks a bit lonely there though!
