Got another one; the Mini. It looks fine in any color because, let's face it, they already look like they were stolen off a ride at an amusement park....
Keep your hands in the car, have fun and thank you for coming to Lagoon.
I think that's it. Beetles and Minis -- they're small, they have kind of a roundish look to them, they're baby cars. Therefore, they are cute, and cute cars can be cute colors. It's okay to be round a funky-looking. This doesn't work for most other vehicles. Think about it: a man who wishes to establish himself as a big, tough cowboy (no doubt Republican and homophobic) does not buy himself a pale blue Mini. He buys a gas-guzzling SUV, Hummer, or Dodge Ram in a "tough" color, like black. Supermom in her minivan does not paint it sunshine yellow because it might lessen her authority over the 8 kids she hauls around to soccer practice in it. No one is going to take Mom seriously if she drives a van that looks like Big Bird. But cowboys and supermoms dont' even fit physically into cars like Minis and Beetles; that could be why they don't fit psychologically either.
Geez. I cannot believe I just got from Lagoon cars to psychoanalysis in one comment.....
Hmm, wonder if I can sue for literary whiplash? Ah, forget it, you're a teacher, I wouldn't get much. But I ask, is there anyone out there that didn't have a friend that owned an orange Beetle in the 70's? Greer Prince, not to be confused with the Artist Formerly Known as the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, had one. Orange, yellow or red. You couldn't go outside without seeing one.....
Well, I was just reading Wikipedia and found out that it was in 1977 that they stopped selling the original Beetle in the US, so they probably weren't as prevalent in the 80's as in the 70's. (they sold them in Mexico until 2003!)But at least you owned one, I never did.
Today I saw a bright turquoise VW bus that probably dated from the mid-70s. It looked just fine that color, so maybe we should add those to your list. (Again, I can't picture a mini van in bright turquoise without wanting to retch,t hough.)
Well, now... You have the Mini Cooper that looks like a bumper car. Then there's the Scion xB? I have to agree with my wife that it looks like a clown car.. That's how it can get away with some really bizarre paint jobs... I'm sure you'll come up with some pics for that Max... -Frankie

On a lighter note, I had friends who owned a dark orange Beetle in the 70s. they called it "the pumpkin."

Hey, I didn't own my '66 Beetle until 1982. (It was metallic blue.)
But my neighbors had a robin's egg blue one in about 1970.....
Literary whiplash. OH my. I'm still laughing.
There's a reason why you have all these women half in love with you, Max.....
