Can you go an hour without any electrical use at all? Tomorrow, Saturday, night is Earth Hour. Salt Lake City, the Marriott hotels, McDonalds, National Geographic, Wells Fargo, the LDS Church and more, are going to be turning off their lights from 8:30 to 9:30 pm tomorrow night. I think I'm going to join them. Don't know what I'm going to do for that hour, but it should be interesting trying to amuse myself without any electricity. No computer, no DVD. My first thought was to go for a drive, but then that would kind of defeat the purpose, especially if I went in one of the LTDs. So, I'll probably take out the camera and the tripod and amuse myself that way.

Interesting idea. If you are going to use a digital camera, then wouldn't that also defeat the purpose of the "hour". How about going for a walk (assuming Salt Lake is safe), or read by candlelight in your backyard (assuming the weather is good).
Yeah. I thought about the electronic camera angle, but decided that since I'm not going to be a total purist anyway, I can still use the camera. I'd have to remove the batteries from all my clocks and reset everything afterwards, and the city already conceded that they'll leave power on to things that involve public safety. So, I'm just going to turn off all the lights, computers, TV's and any other non-essential stuff, and leave the cars in the garage.
Salt Lake is a pretty safe city, there are only a few areas I wouldn't feel comfortable walking around at night, and I'm lucky enough to live in a really nice area. In that respect, I'm also lucky being a guy, since a few of my female friends have commented that they wouldn't feel comfortable alone at night even in some of the safer areas. But that's a whole other issue.

I agree with you that turning off clocks, refridgerator, stereo, microwave etc...would be an act of extremism. I think the whole purpose of "the hour" is more symbolic than anything else. However, unlike the things mentioned above, I don't think a camera would fit in the same catagory.
I'll also have to add that with or without the camera, you will still be doing more than I will. So, I'm in no position to critize.
