Goblin Valley again.

Went camping down by Goblin Valley again this weekend.  Found the same awesome campground that we stayed at last year, it was even empty but we decided not to stay there.

The only way to it, and back out, is across a dry wash.  Well, dry most of the time.  Oh, it was dry(ish) when we got there, but the National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for the area.  We would have been fine in the campground, but with the possibility of getting stuck there, we decided to find a different place to camp, right on the other side of the wash.

We were going to stay until Sunday, but decided to come home Friday night.  Sitting in the tent/camper in the rain didn’t sound like much fun, and packing up while it was raining even less like fun.

The day we were there was great.  Relaxed, hiked, played in the mud that was there.  That’s the problem with planning a trip in advance, the weather doesn’t always cooperate.

We also rediscovered an old find.  On the way home we stopped in Salina for dinner, at a little café called Mom’s Café.  The food was great and at a good price.   The people there were great, just your basic down-home service.  Josh’s steak was awesome, Dylan said his grilled cheese was the caliber he dreamed of (ok, he is only 11, but the one he had in Hanksville went uneaten).

If you’re in Salina during meal time, I’d suggest trying it.

And let the eating begin......

We flew into Providence, got our rental car (Chrysler mini-van, we were stylin'!) and headed out to the Cape. After we got settled into our hotel room, a nice, clean, respectable but very small room in a remodeled older motel, we headed out to find something to eat. We found a little cafe arount the corner called The Narrows and had what I came all this way for; clam chowder and fried clams. We got back to the hotle just in time to get a call from our younger brother, he was staying with relatives just around the corner from our hotel. The first thing he asks is "you guys coming over for dinner?" Yeah, we were stuffed already, but we wanted to go visit so I told him this and asked "there's no way we can come over to visit and not eat, is there?" Yeah, right. These are old Italian ladies. So we went over, had some crab keiche, espresso and home made biscotti. Sat around and chatted with them until midnight and then headed back to the hotel. Thus endeth day one, but not the eating.

Frankenfinger and the Salisbury Steak.

Remember salisbury steak, still the frozen dinner favorite? Basically a hamburger cooked in a gooey gravy with chunks of onion, a way of dressing up cheap burger at the end of the month. I remember as a kid thinking of it as "old folks food", it's kind of bland, I didn't much care for it, but the adults seemed to like it. Well, as I'm eating my microwaved salisbury steak, I'm thinking "this ain't half bad, it'd probably be pretty good if was made fresh." Sheesh! All that's left is the ear hair and bi-focals. Uh, ok, just the ear hair.....
.
Tuesday the bandage on my finger got wet at school so I changed it. Had to show off the finger before wrapping it up. Two days later as I'm walking down the hall one of the teachers asks me "So, how's Frankenfinger doing?" Took me a second or two to make the connection, but so funny it made the whole experience worthwhile. Almost.
